Jacquin, a distinguished scientist, was born in Leiden and established his career in Vienna. He served for a time as head of the Schonbrunn Gardens, which, during his tenure, became one of the most celebrated gardens of its day. He was a prolific and sensitive draftsman, said to have made more than 7,000 drawings of plants.
His engravings are virtually flawless, exceptional in terms of their execution and colouring.
